Grecco Romank share their new single, â2 Hot 2 Huntâ, from their upcoming album due out later this year.
âOh, this heatâs got me in a prone hold. Itâs too hot. Itâs too hot to hunt.â
How timely. As summer lingers, the scent of daisies and freshly mowed grass begins to vanish, and other smells permeate the air. These are, shall we say, smells less commonly associated with romantic poems, but
they are by no means obscure to many of us. Just point your nose at your floorboards and sniff at the expired rat that lies underneath,
baking in its makeshift oven. Even in mundane and everyday contexts, death is not far away, and by its smell, we apprehend an
abstract notion as powerfully real: Lateness.
So, even when your daily stroll gives you damp, sweaty clothes, your nasal cavity is getting used to what Grecco Romank have trained themselves on since 2020. Like a detectiveâs bloodhounds,
Grecco Romank dutifully pursue foetid emanations. Only, this smell is not from necrotic tissue or perspiration, but a wasting civilisation. It can be found not in the dungeons of the world that once hosted pagans and heretics, but those that, in our current year, host pilled-out raves. Grecco
Romank have followed every scent to its source, sharing the results in two inspired albums, Red Tower (2021) and Wet Exit (2023).
Now, hot under the collar, these freaks are taking off their leash. In 2 Hot 2 Hunt, Grecco Romank skewer climate ambivalence, yet without succumbing to didacticism (a death rattle of its own). The songâs three part structure unfolds in stages, never revisiting itself and yet never
becoming distracted from its own idea. Let the Virus TIâs cold hypersaws, the songâs advanced guard, lead you forward. Let the 909 drums hold you steady. From an opening croak which sneers and yet declares itself lazy, it is unknown whose voice Mikey Sperring is ventriloquising. Is it a
poacher, passing out in a heatwave? Or is it an apathetic Millennial, resigned from the pitfalls of online dating? As if to signal that this character finds their second wind, the song springs back
into action in the second part, rising to a climax that culminates in the third sectionâs declaration of complete annihilation. Inside the âroach pitâ, man and beast squirm in a dionysian frenzy.
As a coda, singer Billie Feeâs own words are resampled and played back, emerging as a caution from the unknowable void that is the posthuman. Itâs safe to say by now that the robots are here, and you have been put out of a job.
âBait and trap. Burning and turning inside the roach pit.â This is 2 Hot 2 Hunt. This is Grecco Romank. Itâs unclear whether the
avant-dance troikaâs rituals are necromancy designed to invite the ghosts of the past, or the rituals of an obsessive, hoping to ward
them off. Similarly, is their mottled musical assemblage a form of alchemy, or a psychiatric innovation in drug delivery, designed to
break the brain-blood barrier? âAs club music producers, we are either incapable or self-sabotagingâ, says Damian Golfinopoulos
(electronics). â[Our] attempt to imitate something danceable always comes out with a stilted, aggressive tic.â
We cannot know whether such tics will save the planet. Nor could Nostradamus have known that as each civilisationâs columnated
ruins have fallen, their inhabitants might have gone out less pathetically had this song been the last sound they heard.
As for Grecco Romank? âWe embrace stupidityâ, the band says. âEnjoy the hellscapeâ.
2 Hot 2 Hunt is the first single to be released from Arts Colony, Grecco Romankâs new album, due out later this year.
